Vandalised headstones replaced at Hirst Wood Burial Ground

We are so pleased to report that the six headstones vandalised at the Hirst Wood Burial Ground in Shipley in the week of the 75th anniversary of D-Day in early June have now been replaced by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).

We are immensely grateful for the quick response from the CWGC, who acted within 24 hours of hearing about the damage to the war graves, by sending a team to remove the broken stones and place temporary memorials on the graves.

We would also like to thank the local, and not so local, community, for their many kind messages of support and offers of help. Working parties will be held in the autumn to remove excessive growth from pathways and obscuring inscriptions. Anyone wishing to offer to help may do so via the Contact Us page on the website.
